Swimming and Surfing

The reality that children can live so close to the ocean and never get the chance to swim and play in the waves is heartbreaking. That was the impetus for our creating Las Tortuguitas. We work with young boys and girls of all ages to get them comfortable with the surf, and to learn the mechanics and techniques of swimming and surfing. That first moment when they pop up on a surfboard and ride a wave — it can be freeing, and empowering, and life changing. We know the talent is there, we know the confidence is there, but it takes a great teacher, and the support of many, to create an opportunity for those attributes to arise and awaken — an opportunity for these kids to realize that one great moment of personal achievement.

Where does your donation go?

Instruction

A large part of your donation goes to pay for the time of our instructor and fearless leader Andres. He is a professional surf instructor and spends most of his time away from Las Tortuguitas working with tourist families and their children, teaching beginner and advanced surfing skills.

Las Tortuguitas Shuttle

Some of your donation goes to upkeep and maintenance on the Las Tortuguitas vehicle, which makes the entire program possible. As many know, it is not cheap to keep a vehicle running in Costa Rica.

Food & Beverages

Some of your money goes to feeding the children. Healthy eating and a diet that includes fruits and vegetables can make all the difference for young kids expending energy and trying new things.

Equipment

Some of your money goes to equipment including surfboards, leashes, fins and wax. We have been blessed with donations of boards, but the maintenance and upkeep is expensive.

Outfitting

Some of your money goes towards the printing and shipping of t-shirts and rash guards for our Tortuguitas. Whether they are wearing a sharp everyday t-shirt or avoiding board scrapes and sunburn in a high-quality Las Tortuguitas rash guard, they are looking 100%.
